Brew Method: Moka Pot

Brew Method: Moka Pot

Dating back to the early 1900’s, the Moka Pot is a brewer often remembered as something that you or your parents own, but nobody remembers buying. They’ve just always been there. Commonly misunderstood by using cold water to start and too finely ground coffee, they’re a charming brewer to use and can produce quite a tasty cup when done right.

What you’ll need

  • Moka Pot
  • Grinder & Coffee (or ground coffee)
  • Gas Cooktop
  • Kettle
  • Cup

Recipe

Moka Pots come in a wide range of sizes. Thankfully, they're all built to hold the perfect amount of water and coffee. Whether you're using a little 1 cup or a massive 8 cup, follow these guidelines for a perfect brew.

Method

  1. Fill the base with boiled water just below the steam valve. Starting with hot water will keep the brewer from overheating and damaging the coffee before it's even brewed.

  2. Fill the basket level to the top with ground coffee and place on the base. You don’t need to tamp or compact the grounds.

  3. Use a tea towel or soft pot holder to carefully screw back together.

  4. Place on flame no bigger than the circumference of the brewer.

  5. Once the coffee begins to spit and spatter, remove from the heat and run the base under cold water.

  6. Pour into your favourite cup and enjoy!
